The Amazon (Brazilian Portuguese) or Amazon (European Portuguese) (also called the Amazon rainforest, the Amazon Jungle, Equatorial Forest of the Amazon Rain Forest or Hylean Amazon) is a moist broadleaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America . This basin encompasses seven million square kilometers, of which five and a half million square kilometers are covered by rain forest. This region includes territory belonging to nine nations. Most of the forests is contained within Brazil, with 60% of the forest, followed by Peru with 13% and small amounts in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and France (French Guiana). States or departments in four nations bear the name Amazonas for it. The Amazon represents over half the planet's remaining rainforests and comprises the most biodiverse tropical forest in the world. It is one of the six major biomes.
